SBTI vs Oxford Priniciples

Overview
We often get asked which Net Zero protocol is better, SBTi or Oxford Principles.
The answer is not simple. SBTi is a formal framework and validation process concerned with documenting and following a plan to reduce your emissions. Oxford Principles is a best practice guide on how to robustly compensate for your residual emissions on a yearly basis and is more pragmatic and flexible than SBTi.
Both approaches have their benefits and limitations, and because of their different focus, can work together.
Below we present a high-level table comparing the two approaches:

A new draft of The SBTi is out which will bring in the concept of "ongoing emission responsibility," a new recognition program for companies taking responsibility for residual emissions, and a more structured approach to target setting across different scopes of emissions, thus potentially bringing the program more in line with the Oxford Principles.
